Cuba: A Secret in the Caribbean
May 6, 2006
Here are some friends that I have made and some wonderful faces that you encounter as you walk around this city. Today I took a taxi to the Cathedral of the Virgin of Charity. She is the patron Saint of Cuba. She appeared to three young men who were suddenly caught in a dangerous storm while out at sea fishing for their families. Fearing for their lives they began praying for an intervention. Through the frightening sea she appeared on a small wooden raft and told them that she was the Virgin of Charity. The raging waters all around them instantly fell flat and she vanished. They made their way back to their village and the villagers seeing that the three had made it ashore were completely amazed. Then the young men told them of the Virgin of Charity and how she had appeared after they had prayed for help.
A City Where Smiles Abound
writtings by Gary Scozzafava
Havana teems with heart and soul, endless color washed upon a backdrop of poverty. Yet so many habaneros assure you that money and “things” lie not at the heart of la allegria happiness, that their smiles spring from their love of family and the soul of their music. The deep love which shines in their eyes is testimony to their undying love of life. A rebel philosophy is also alive throughout the city where whitewashed walls are painted with slogans like “NO Somos ALCAhuetes” .. We are not NAFTA dependents. Many Havanans would of course like an easier life, one with more food and more clothes but surely they would forfeit so much if mega-corporate America ever rooted their viral cookie-cutter stores all over this precious land.
